Local Barbershop a "Cut above the Rest"
Born and raised in Ethiopia, Moges Tena came to the United States in 2000 with 5 years of experience working at a barbershop. Driven to open his own shop here in Minnesota, Moges attended Minneapolis Community & Technical College to pursue his Associate’s Degree. He then enrolled in barber school and received his license in 2004. After working a few years for another barbershop in Minneapolis, Moges determined it was time to open his own shop aimed at the large and growing African community in the region.
Understanding the competitive nature of his industry, Moges focused on finding a location most accessible to his target clients. He sums up his decision to open MG PRO Barbershop within the Cedar Riverside neighborhood by stating: “I chose this location because there’s a lot of traffic and this is where the African community is saturated”.”
Moges has approached ADC on a couple of occasions to assist him in fulfilling his dream of opening and running a successful barbershop. ADC was proud to offer MG PRO Barbershop multiple loans to help with the opening of the business, and then a remodel of the shop. Additionally, Moges credits much of his success to the one-on-one counseling and technical assistance from ADC in running his business.
The African Development Center is pleased to highlight the hard work and dedication that Moges shows in both his business operations and customer service. For Moges, cutting hair is an art form and he extremely proud of the fact that he can cut all types of hair as well as freestyle with designs for clients. His friendly demeanor and excellent rapport with clients is a driving factor behind his ability to draw an increasing customer base from both the local African community and beyond. Since the remodel of MG Barbershop, his business has grown by 30%!
Moges’ vision is to expand his operations to an additional barbershop in another neighborhood, where he can hire barbers and hairstylists. With his drive and skill, ADC has no doubt that this dream can soon become a reality!
