ADC Supports Youth Development Efforts in the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood

The African Development Center hosted the first annual Students Against Violence (SAV) recruitment event of 2010 at the Meridel Le Sueur center. The event was an informational meeting for at-risk Somali youth to join SAV’s Role Modelz program.

SAV is a five-member student project that works to find constructive solutions to end youth violence in the Somali community through advocacy, leadership and commitment. SAV offers leadership development to boys between 14-19 years old to become emerging leaders within their community.

ADC Interns Gain Experience, Delve into Community Development

During a given semester, ADC works with 2-3 individuals who volunteer their time and talent to carry out ADC’s mission.

Meet Anna, a freshman at Harvard University who came to the organization this winter. Anna is studying International Finance and African Studies. In many ways, ADC complements her business studies and her academic and personal interest in African cultures, people, and continent quite well.

Celebrating Small Business Development in Minneapolis

The celebration for the Great Streets program was hosted at ADC’s new home in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, a venue the Manager of the Seward Co-op described as the other anchor of Riverside Avenue.

The celebration occurred at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27th, and over sixty people came to hear stories about business successes, innovative programs, and how partnership can work to lift communities during the most difficult of times.

OVERVIEW

On 0ctober 30, 2009, the Twin Cities Immigrant Roundtable and the African Development Center co-convened a three- hour immigration forum at the International Institute in St. Paul. The event focused on issues and challenges affecting Minnesota’s and thus America’s immigrant communities.
